What are some specific ways that inferring can help you to better understand what you are reading? Think back to all the inferring activities we did in class and use examples in your answer.

  1. Specific ways inferring helps you understand what you're reading is if the character is walking around with his head low and droopy. You can infer that they are sad or tired. Other specific ways you understand is when you infer you can tell what the character is feeling. That might help you understand the character better. Understanding the character better will help you so you understand the book better than you did before.

  2. Inferring helps me understand my book better because it wants me to read on and it it makes me think harder about my background knowledge. Like in the book about the Holacaust, I had to use my background knowledge and my inferring skills to make an educated guess about what might happen in the later parts of the book. Another example is when you brought in the objects and we wrote down our infrence and then you gave us clues and a connection in a book could be like context clues.

  3. Inferring helps me understand the vocab of the book. It also helps me be abel to understand the meaning of the book. You can inferre what could happen in the book or anything else. But most of all it helps me with my background knowledge.you know when you make a thougt in your head and think what will happen that is useing you inferring skills.
If you read a book and find things you don't know and you geuss or predicted that is inferring. so next time you read a book and don't know a word just inferre.

  4. It helps me to understand what I'm reading because I can identify the theme of the book I'm reading. For example, when we did the activity using the book Feathers and Fools. The author didn't come right out and say that the theme of the book is war and friendship. You had to infer what the theme was by the characters actions and thoughts. When the peacocks and swans started sharpening feathers and the earth was covered with blood, you could infer that a war was going on. Then when the baby swan and peacock meet eachothar and became friends, that was a inference that the 2nd theme was friendship. It is hard to understand the book if you don't understand what the theme(s) is/are.

  5. It helps me by taking what I now and making an prdiction, like in the book Hooway for Woodney Wat he looked sad with his head in his coat. Then I thought I just perdicted, if I didn't perdict I wouldn't understand the book.

  6. Inferring can help you understand what you are reading better because when your book is talking about somthing that you really have to inferr on then you need to know how to inferr to help make you understand the book a lot better than before you inffered. You may not even understand the book If you do not inferr because Like in the book Feathers and fools you would not be able to understand the book if you did not inferr.

  7. some specific ways that infering can help you with is one it can help you figure out what theme the author is trying to set like in Fethers and Fools it diddent say at the begining of the book that the book theme was war/battle and freindship. The author was trying to set a battle/war theme and a freindship theme. I know this beacause the peacoks were disgusted with the fact that the swans could fly and so they started a war all the birds died. but there was two eggs one a peacok the other a swan when they hatched the peacok said "Hey! your just like me you have feathers and a mouth!" and the swan said "your just like me! you have a head and two eyes!" and so the peacok said "shall we be freinds?" and the swan said "We shall" so they scamperd off in the woods together.

  8. #1. Some specific ways that inferring can help me to better understand what I am reading are using context clues, re-reading, questioning, using my schema, and predicting. An example of using questioning and schema is when Mrs.K read River to Freedom Valley we where asking questions and some of them didn`t get answered and so we inferred the answer and we used our schema.

  9. Inferring helps me understand what I'm reading by letting me know the personality and characteristics of someone in a book. Or, it can help me by getting me thinking deeper about what I read, like thinking about little details or hints the book gives you to let you know something (context clues). Therefore, it helps me think about little things like pictures on the front cover, or key words. All this inferring will help me understand what I'm reading!

  10. 16G. Well it can help you understand what you are reading like FEATHERS AND BIRDS. Well it helped because we did not we did not know the theme was war of friendship. We could have thought it was a tragedy. But if you infer a little the peacok hated the fact the swans could fly but they could not. And they went to war. So you could infer that it was a war . Because they went to war. And at the end they became friends at the end so infer and you could infer it was also about friendship. And time we did those what is this object with out telling us what the object was. So we had to infer what it was. Well thye secand time mrs.Kapfhammer showed the object but did some stuff with it. So we infered again but we knew better of what the object was. We can infer on objects, books, what people fell like happy ,sad, mad, etc. You can like infer on anything. 16G

  11. The good thing about inferring would be that it makes reading easier. It helps make things become more clear to the reader by using descriptive words. For example, the author would words like grump to infer that the character is grumpy. It helps me figure out the characters, the plot and the setting.

  12. It helps me to understand better because i can pick a theme and better understand it like in fools and feathers the themes were hope and war. Also it helps me predict because if you don't infer what's happing (if you can't understand it) you can't predict whats happing next.Like in the Anne Frank activity.

  13. How it helps me is by.... it helps me ask more questions when i'm reading bcause when i ask questions it helps me understand what i'm readind . sometimes it gives you the answer in the text but sometimes you have to infer the answer.

  14. it helps you understand the book and it wants
you to read on and use your back ground knolage to figure out what the theme is
like in Fethers & Fools, you know by
your background knolage that the theme is
friends & war. you can use infuring to figure out what the book was about from the cover like in Fethers and fools i knew that
the charactors in the book were birds and they were foolish.

  15. Some specific ways of using infering is using context clues or predictions. Like in Feathers and Fools, we predicded when we saw the cover which we all had very good predictions!!

  16. Inferring help's me understand the book by using my schema on what i already know about the book. Also you can inferr what the character's are feeling in the book you are reading. For example watson's go to burmingham you can inferr what they mean by the wool poo. You caan inferr that probably there grandma sand's is from the south.

  17. Inferring can help me understand the book better because it can help me understand the theme of the book. Without the theme the book wouldn't make any sense for example in Feathers and Fools we wouldn't know what the book was talking about if there was no theme. It can also help me understand the book by if we have a question about the book that wasn't answered in the book then you can infer the answer or use your background knowledge and the text clues to help you infer the answer.

  18. A specefic way that infering helps us understand the book is the theme. Like when we read Feathers and Fools. You infered that the story was about war becuse in the book they start fighting. You also infer that there is a fool in the story because 1. the title is called Feathers and FOOLS<- and 2. in the story one of the peacocks thinks that the swans are going to start a war but that peacock was really fool becuse the swans never would have done anything to hurt them unless the peacocks did something tothem first. So, you can infer things from the title and from the information you get from the information you have read so far in the book you are currently reading or inbooks you have previously read.

  19. 1:Infering can helps me understand what I'm reading by, asking questions about the text but infering what the answer is. Also by using your schema about what you now, and about what you have read in the text(book). Another way is predicting what will happen later on in the story.

  20. Inferring can help you understand the theme of a book. When we read the book "Feathers and Fools" we inferred the theme of the story by looking at the cover. Another reason inferring can help you is because it can help you figure out what certian objects, words, phrases, paragraphs and whole books mean. For example: When we did the inferring activity where we tried to make an educated guess on what the object was, using our background knowledge and the clues/hints you gave us. Also inferring can help you to know how the character is feeling in a story. For example: If your book read "She stomped into the room and slammed the door behind her", you can infer that the character is mad or angry.

  21. You can use the context clues from the books you read. For example when we read many books in Mrs.K's class. You can also use your back ground knowledge (schema) to answer questions. You can ask questions while you read to try to figure out what happens next. For example, When we asked ouestions and wrote them down on sticky notes. Then when we finished reading the book we figured out if the questions were answered, unanswered, or if you could infer to see what happens. After that we stuck them on a chart to see what we did. These are some ways inferring helps me be a better reader.

  22. inferring helps you figure out the theme of a book, what a word means from text clues or pictures, and helps you make predictions.like feathers and fools the theme is friendship&war(in a way,it was no mater your differances you are equal.)I also figured out that just by looking at the title it was about birds&they were folish.

  23. Infering is a very helpful reading skill. It helps you get a better understanding of the characters and settings in your book. For example, you infer how characters are feeling. Like in the Hooway for Wodney Wat, in our activity when we acted out how they were feeling and thinking. We read about "Wodney" going from shy, embarassed, and outcasted to proud, heroic, and confident. We used inferring to help us figure out "Wodney's true thoughts and feelings. Also, in the book Feathers and Fools, we used infering to help us grasp the true meaning you get out of it. The theme, in other words. (The theme was war and equality/friendship.)

  24. Infering is a really important reading skill. One thing it alows you to do is figure out the purpose of the book. When we read the book Feathers and Fools, we used our infering skills to understand the true meaning of the book. In this case it was friendship, hope, and war.Infering also allows you to make connections throught out your book and also relate to the characters. An example of this is when you read the book Hooway for Wodney Wat. While you were reading, you would alow students to come up and act out the characters. This alowed us to relate to the characters more scince we were acting like them.

  25. Infering can better help you understand what you are reading. For example, if you get stuck on a word that you don't know, then you can look at the context clues around the word to help you figure out the word. You could also use your schema. When you use your schema, you can connect from things in the book to things you know in real life. You could also use questioning to help you infer. This means that during the book, you might have a question about the book or maybe about the characters.

  26. inferring can help when you are reading because it helps you figure out a better understanding of the characters and their feelings. for example, in "wodney wat" when they were playing simon says he came out of his jacket and became confident in himself. he wasnt embarrassed anymore and you could infer that he was braver because at the beginning of the book he always hid in his jacket but towards the end he came out of his jacket all the way! we could also infer the theme of the book like we did in the book "feathers and fools." we inferred feathers and fools from the title and it was about war and loyalty. another way to infer is by using your background knowledge or your schema on any words you dont know! my last reason about how inferring helps me when i read i that you can infer what is going to happen just from the context clues. inferring makes reading a lot easier in my opinion because it makes the words clearer and everything! so thats how inferring helps me when i am reading!!!

  27. Inferring can help me understand what I am reading, because if you come across a word that you do not know the meaning of than you can infer what the meaning is of that word. I infer when trying to figure out what the character is going to do next. Inferring helps understand the book because you can also infer and put yourself in the characters shoes and to help me understand the book by trying to think what they are thinking. Like in Holes, when I was reading it, inferring helped me understand what Stanley was thinking, and what he was going through.
You can infer in other stuff too, not just books.

  28. Infering is very important. It personaly helps me understand books. It helps me understand the book by helping me understand the main idea of the book.It also helps me understand the characters. some of the activities that we did that helpedme was reading the books and writing what was answered in the text ,what was not answered and whatwas infered.then we had to infer what we could and if we couldnt infer it thenwe would just put it in the not answered in the text.

  29. Inferring can help you answer questions, infer what may happen next, and how the character is feeling. When we read Howay For Wodney Wat, we slected students to be a certain character, and said what that character might have been saying or thinking. Also, when we read the Anne Frank book, we looked at the pictures and made an educated guess on what was going on in the scene.

  30. Infering when i'm reading helps me when im reading by helping me understannd what words that i don't know the meaning of. For example; when i was reading my book club book when I came across a word that i'v never hered been spoken before. I took all the text clues and mashed them up to figure out what they mean. another thing that infering helps me with is by "infering" what is going to happen. Just like the exemple of when Huston got pulled out of class by mrs.Morgan when she was red faced and she was slamming doors. we infered that Huston was going to be in trouble because of her attitude and her actions.

  31. You infer all the time, but you don't know you are infering. When we read Feather and fools, we had to infer to answer some questions that the class had. And so we would infer; But if we cant infer then you have to search to find the answer. And here are some examples that infering can help you: Schema can help infer, Backgrund knowledge can help you, and questions can help you by inferring what the answer is.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ifering helps me so I can tell what will happen. For an ex. feathers & fools. I thought it was going to be about two birds that be friends and then the story ends. Well they don't live happly ever after, they go to war & they all die exept for 2. They live happly ever after. Infering also helps me predict what will happen to the caracters. For another ex., when the birds hatched out of there eggs, I thought that the whole war thing was going to reastart, well they both become friends and thats the end. Thats how infering helps me.

    ReplyDelete
  33. ifering helps me figure out the theme of the book it also helps to try to think ahead of what might happen. It teaches me schema and backround knowlegde so ican think and remember what the book is about. if we read books like hooray for wodney wat and feathers and fools in class for hooray for wodmey wat a couple people came up and acted the charecters of the book that helped us understand the book in feathers and fools we inferd the meanings were battle and war and frendship because we infered while we were reading

    ReplyDelete
  34. Inferring helps me better understand what I read because just like in class when Mrs.Kapfhammer held up the objects we had to infer what they were, and that gives you a better idea of what it is. Just like when you infer when your reading.

    ReplyDelete
  35. WOW! I am really impressed by these new answers. If you look back to our old post on inferring, you can tell that most of you have a much better understanding now. I am really happy at the effort I have seen this time. Keep it up.

  36. Inferring helps me understand the text better. For example, one time when we really had to infer was when we read the book Feathers and Fools. We inferred that there was a misunderstanding between the two types of birds. That misunderstanding caused the birds to go to war against each other. At the end, only 2 baby birds survived, and they realized that they are both unique in their own way. This book was about war, misunderstanding, bloodshed, and friendship. That is how inferring helps me understand my books.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Infering helps me as a reader by helping me understand what is going on in the book. For example, when I was reading Mixed up Files i didnt understand ANYTHING! So i re-read and infered what it meant by using the clues that the book gave me already. #2g

  38. specific ways inferring can help me understand what im reading is from good descriptive language. another way is when i see things in pictures or in real life and maybe even in movies i can infer what it is like what we did in mrs.k's class when she would pull stuff out of the bag and we would have to infer what it is then she would put the other piece with it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. infering helps me by looking at the words and the descipitev langug in the words and the life like pictures will help better and when mrs.kapfhammer pulled the stuff out of the bag and we had to infer what it was and how it is uesed and what it is used for.

  40. Ways of inferring are looking at pictures, rereading the text, text features if they are present, predicting and imagine what is happening. All of these strategies help you understand the book
